Subject: HistoryTopic: Portrayal of Confucian Filial Piety in the Legend of Miao-ShanPaper details:
1) Topic: Portrayal of Confucian Filial Piety in the Legend of Miao-Shan 2) Issue and Context: Filial piety is a value of Chinese culture based on the biblical commandment of honoring one’s parents. In Chinese culture, filial piety is based on the principles of obedience, obligation, and obedience. It is the foundation of how Chinese families are organized and the Chinese society as a whole. Therefore, filial piety culture ensures children obey and follow the instructions provided by their parents and elders.
Filial piety is portrayed in the Legend of Miao-Shan, where Miao was supposed to respect her father and mother’s wishes. Confucianism in the Chinese culture legitimized filial piety. It emphasized that by observing filial piety, the society maintained a moral order that held the Chinese family together. Generally, filial piety ensured Chinese families kept a hierarchical system where men and older generations had power over women and young generations. Therefore, filial piety in the Chinese culture informs my level-3 research question and provides me with an insight into the subject. 3) Level 3 question: How does the Legend of Miao-Shan portray filial piety and reincarnation in Buddhism?
This is a level-3 question because it calls for analysis to understand how the Legend of Miao-Shan depicts filial piety and its connection to Buddhism’s belief in reincarnation. According to Buddhism teachings, a person is reborn after dying, which is reincarnation. Miao-Shan believed that by dying, she would liberate herself and return to earth as a different person who can make her own choices. As seen in the text, Miao-Shan was obligated to obey her parents’ wishes and demands, but she chose to avoid self-indulgence and liberated herself through death.
4) Thesis (Argument): As seen in the Legend of Miao-Shan’s story, families were supposed to adhere to the cultural values of filial piety. When Miao-Shan came of age, her father insisted that she should marry like her older sisters. However, Miao-Shan opposes her father’s demands and embraces a religious life as a Buddhist.
As a result of her actions, Miao-Shan’s father chooses to punish her to submit to his wishes and become filial. Main argument: The concept of filial piety is based on the fact that children are eternally obligated towards them for all the things children receive from their parents. As a result, they have a debt towards their parents, a debt that can only be repaid by obeying and serving them. In the Legend of Miao-Shan’s story, Miao chooses a different path that goes against the values of filial piety.
Counterargument: The concept of filial piety was the pillar of the Chinese family in which children were supposed to be always filial. However, Miao-Shan’s refusal for marriage angers his father, and he decides to torture her to force her to accept his wishes. Miao-Shan does not receive the necessary support as depicted by Confucian virtues’ social ethics because of her choice. As a result, she chooses to liberate herself through death and, in turn, saves her father.
