Interviews with Executives at Applied Technical Services (ATS)
George, CEO
1.What is your vision for the future of ATS with Creation?
George’s vision is that the goals and values of ATS are carried through by Creation during their acquisition. Many things are changing such as the structure of the company, operations, managerial roles, etc. So it is important that the mission and values he has established are maintained.
2.Are Creation’s goals consistent with the goals of ATS?
It’s because Creation shares the goals of ATS that George has sold them the company. In fact, Creation’s goals are to be as good as ATS, and they want to emulate the success of ATS. Creation takes good care of their people and customers.
3.How is your vision for the company communicated to employees?
George’s response was that he “lives the vision”. His vision is communicated in everything he does, and through every interaction he has. It is “reinforced on an hourly basis” and at every opportunity. It is also formerly communicated during employee orientation. The company’s operations need to be consistent with the vision.
4.Have employee’s performance changed since Creation’s acquisition of ATS?
Yes, as there are new “organizational politics”. George is only remaining at ATS temporarily so pretty soon employees will have a new boss. With this is mind, George says employee behavior has changed and that they have to adapt to the transition that is taking place. In the long term, employees seek to establish good relationships with Creation.
5.How do you keep your team motivated in the midst of obstacles or conflicts?
Because the employees at ATS are so driven, George’s role is to remove obstacles if they are presented and to clear a path that will enable his team to succeed. He says it’s important to know what motivates his team, and because they too want to succeed, it is a joint effort to overcome obstacles, and George will help navigate the process.
6.How will ATS maintain “Best Workplace” Culture during this transitional time?
In his response, George says to establish equity, treat those within the company fairly, and to protect them. This, in part, is why ATS has been recognized and rewarded as Washington State’s “Best Workplace” for consecutive years. Maintaining is one thing, prepping is another, which is why ATS sets goals and lays out a plan to achieve them. Rewards and incentives are used to encourage high performance.
7.How are employees encouraged to develop new and more efficient ways to do their work?
Every day at 7:30 am, George and his team have a gemba-styled meeting. They discuss safety, efficiency of operations, if standards are being hit for quality, labor, etc. In doing so, George and employees are actively seeking continual improvement on work processes and outcomes. There is constant feedback in an environment that is already “highly driven”, Through communication and collaboration, employees are encouraged to identify setbacks and inefficiencies so solutions can be found. George also mentioned that bonuses are equal.
8.How do you maintain employee engagement when in an environment of uncertainty and change?
George says that over the years of running ATS, he has established himself as a trusted, effective leader, which in turn reduces uncertainty. Because George and his company have not only survived but thrived over the years, employees are engaged in their work even when faced with uncertainty. George also doesn’t like sugar coating things. He’s honest and upfront which alleviates uncertainty.
9.How will you handle employees if they are showing increased levels of stress during these times?
“There is a basic human need to be understood”, which is why George is always listening. He says when his employees are stressed, he listens and tries to understand. He also adds that stress isn’t entirely bad, and that with stress comes performance, it’s just important that stress is used effectively and it doesn’t become a detriment.
10.How has your leadership styles changed now that Creation’s executives are involved with ATS?
Before selling ATS, George says he had great positional power, because no one could go around him. Now that the power dynamic has changed, his leadership requires different skills. His role as a leader now consists of more mentorship and guidance. He now focuses on broadening his influence so that he maintains effective leadership and employees won’t feel the need to go around him.
