Write a focused literature review discussing in-depth a foundational text (classic or contemporary) that influenced theory and analysis of international politics.
In this research paper you will be investigating how Carr’s skepticism of the league of nations aided in sustaining peace within the Europe? Where does he mention how the League of Nations was premature? He must have identified in parts of the book what would have changed in the league itself in order to sustain peace in Europe. Carr looks at the League of nations and says it fails to do work, are the reasonings he provides on whether the League of Nations succeeds or fails relevant? How much did Carr influence current institutional thinking? How is his work relevant to modern International relations? Does he have an impact on current institutions? If so, why does his work have impact? Can his generic use of institutions be applied now? Throughout the book, who from the Scholars does he draw influence from?
Look at the Frieden, Lake, Schultz Chapters 2 and 5 on dispute settlements, increasing opportunity for interaction and institutions, etc… and look at the arguments they present. Do they correlate with Carr’s theories? Note the scholars they refer back to them (list specific names) and determine whether they are similar to Carr’s theories. Be mindful of the footnotes in both Carr’s book and Frieden, Lake, Schultz’s.
Use the first 4-5 pages summarizing what Carr argues. In the last 5 pages dig deep into the specifics of his argument on why the League failed and where did he get his inspiration from.
Your research paper should be between 10 and 15 pages in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1” margins, double-spaced. Your paper should be formatted with footnotes and with a section of References at the end, using any format of citations you prefer. I recommend a modified Chicago style, with parenthetical references in footnotes. Your references should cite exact page numbers.
I do not have the World Politics: Interests, Interactions, Institutions by Jeffry A Frieden, David A Lake, Kenneth A Schultz (3rd Edition, International Student Edition) please let me know if you have it.
