Imagine a world where you cannot recognize the faces of your spouse and children. Or perhaps you were unable to remember faces not being able to see the meaning behind a face. How would that affect your relations, social life, and work life? Now think about hearing… What are the consequence of hearing loss, and how does it happen? Damage to the parts of the brain that process visual and auditory information can lead to a variety of disorders, depending on which area is damaged. For example, some people with visual agnosia have difficulty recognizing familiar faces or objects, others cannot distinguish color, and still others may not perceive movement.
A related phenomenon is neglect, which results in inattention to one side of the body (and visual field), so that objects on that side are not noticed. There are many interesting case histories of such individuals, and studying both the site of damage and the particular loss of function can tell us a great deal about how the brain allows us to "see" the world. Such disorders also illustrate the principle that visual perception is somewhat modular, meaning that particular aspects of objects are processed by different brain areas. Discussions are an opportunity for you to practice clearly and effectively communicating your ideas, interact with and respectfully challenge your peers, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources.
This discussion helps you explore visual and auditory systems, as well as exploring your understanding of the role of evolution in sensation and perception. Be sure to answer all THREE parts of the discussion and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points. Successfully completing this activity meets Module Outcomes 1, 2, and 3. For maximum points, answer all three parts in your discussion posting (Part I, Part II, and Part III). Part I: Why should natural scenes by used to study visual system neurons? Give an example to support your explanation. In your writing, be sure to describe visual system receptive fields. Part II: Why do you think tinnitus is associated with deafness?
[Hint: Do sensory neurons stop firing in the absence of sensory input?] As part of your answer, be sure to describe the effects of damage to the auditory system and illustrate your writing with an example of someone who has hearing loss. Part III: Why do you think the two-eyes-on-the-front arrangement has evolved in some species but not in others? Many mammals release pheromones that serve as sexual attractants. However, there is no direct evidence that humans do so. Why do you think this difference exists?
