regulation of hazardous waste in laboratories
Discussion 1
Darren
Agency: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
One aspect of safety regulated by this agency is the regulation of hazardous waste in laboratories. This regulation is part of The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which can be found in Appendix IX of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations part 261. The RCRA provides a framework for the proper management of hazardous waste.
An example of a laboratory violating this regulation is in May 2016, a health/environmental testing lab violated hazardous waste regulation by failing to identify hazardous waste and failing to segregate incompatible waste that created the potential for fire or explosions. The lab also failed to follow its own procedures when treating corrosive waste.
Actions that can be taken to ensure hazardous waste regulations are followed can include having a hazardous waste management plan which specifies the best way to manage waste as laid out in the RCRA.

Safety Guideline Regulation
Select one of the agencies discussed in the course module (one you did not look up previously)
The agency OSHA.
Identify one of the aspects of lab safety regulated by this agency. An example is 1910 Subpart I – Personal Protective Equipment. In this OSHA standard, it ensures that individuals in the lab are wearing protective wear when handling chemicals and hazardous materials.
Provide an example (from an internet search) of how this guideline may have been violated resulting in harm to human health or property. You will need to reference the article discussing the violation.
An example of the article by McGarry and co authors explained the risk of PPE shortages in nursing homes during the COVID pandemic. The violation of this violation stated above would lead to more deaths and COVID infection (McGarry et al. 2020). The article further explained that adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary and staffing levels are critical to ensure better protection of the nursing home residents and staff. Infectious viruses and diseases like COVID require health professionals to wear PPE when dealing with patient for safety reasons.
What actions should be taken to assure this regulation is followed in a lab environment. Be specific and refer to the regulation.
For the OSHA regulation on PPE, it is vital to states that 1910 Subpart I – Personal Protective Equipment standard can be regulated by health organizations providing eye and face protection accoridng to the OSH 1910.133, Eye and face protection. Also in the respiratory protection according this regulation aims in ensuring in lab PPE are wore at every time to ensure safety for patients and practitioners when handling COVID or patient test samples.
